The Original Merino Pioneers

Icebreaker was and still is a merino pioneer. In 1994 we were the first to see the huge potential of this incredible natural material that was not only capable of outperforming synthetics and plastics, but was an infinitely better choice for the well-being of our planet. The purity of our relationship with nature and our partners is still what differentiates Icebreaker as the original and most authentic merino brand.

As odd as it may sound at first, merino wool is one of the most comfortable things you can wear in summer. Why? Because merino’s incredibly fine, lightweight fibers can absorb large quantities of moisture vapor and effectively transfer it (through evaporation) into the air. Merino also provides natural protection from UV light and UVB rays.

The Merino is one of the world’s most ancient breeds of sheep and one of the toughest. Unlike regular sheep who chew grass in the lowlands, the merino is built to survive the scorching summers and freezing winters of New Zealand’s rugged Southern Alps Range.

A farmer’s life is anything short of easy, but it’s a family business and their connection to the land is often generations long. They are true custodians of the environment, working in harmony with nature to preserve and protect for future generations.

Icebreaker’s Cool-Lite™ fabric technology combines the natural comfort and breathability of merino with TENCEL®, a natural wood fiber made from sustainable eucalyptus. Capable of wicking sweat three times fast than merino alone, it’s a marriage of fibers made in heaven for those who want to be active, while staying dry and comfortable in the heat of summer.
